Deep Sense™ is a research-informed instructional approach designed to help adolescent readers build stronger info-text comprehension.

I wrote this book for middle and high school teachers (ELA/Reading, ESL, Social Studies, Science, and CTE), literacy and content specialists, and campus administrators who–
- are worried about their students’ ability to make sense of articles, handouts, websites, and textbooks
- are frustrated by the shallow answers they hear during class discussions and read in assignments
- have students who come to them with a distaste for, or downright resistance to, reading complex info-texts.
Studies have shown that strategy instruction improves comprehension IF it is done well. Many strategy-based comprehension programs are designed for younger students and simple, considerate texts. The Deep Sense approach is tailored to adolescent students and complex texts.
Deep Sense offers a four-pronged approach to power up students’ info-text comprehension: (1) rebuilding students’ self-efficacy; (2) explicit strategy instruction; (3) collaborative text-centered discussions; and (4) shared info-text studies.
The purchase of the book includes access to digital instructional and planning materials to take the guesswork out of implementation.
